Dr. Bernard Daly was born in County Mayo, Ireland in 1858. Christmas Eve 1894, he cared for the victims of a Christmas Eve party in Silver Lake for 3 days and 2 nights and never charged a penny. Forty-three people perished as a result of that fire. The reason so many died is the doors didn't open outward, causing the panicked to be "locked in". Soon after, Dr. Daly successfully legislated for the existing law requiring doors in public buildings to open outward. Dr. Daly died in 1920 and in 1922, the first recipient of the Dr. Bernard Daly Educational Fund was chosen, and it has benefited over 1,500 students.
