Frisco, Texas is the safest city in the United States according to our metrics. With a population of just over 200,000, Frisco has the fifth-lowest violent crime rate in the entire study, with 86 reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Property crime and violent crime rates are much lower than the average across the country, and these rates have been steadily declining over time, making Frisco a safer and safer place to live. Danbury, Connecticut is another city that stands out for its low crime rate.
MoneyGeek analyzed the most recent crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to estimate the cost of crime in nearly 300 cities in the United States. In this analysis, we ranked 297 cities with populations of more than 100,000 people from highest to lowest security. Danbury had the lowest overall crime rate in the nation, as well as the lowest rate of property crimes. Portland is another city that has far less crime than similarly sized cities across the country.
MoneyGeek found that the average change in crime in these cities was 11%. Chicago and Philadelphia had some of the most significant increases in crime among major cities in the U. S., while fewer than half of the 15 least safe cities had populations of 300,000 or more. To rank the safest cities in the United States, MoneyGeek started with standardized crime statistics reported to the FBI.
The population of each city was added to the analysis to determine crime rates per 100,000 people, and this information was also accessed through data provided by the FBI. When cities with more than 200,000 people did not have data available in the FBI dataset, MoneyGeek conducted an individualized investigation into standardized crime statistics for each specific city.
