Frisco, TX With just over 200,000 residents, Frisco is the safest city in the United States by our metrics. Located approximately 30 miles north of Dallas, Frisco has the fifth-lowest violent crime rate in our entire study, with 86 reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Portland has far less crime than similarly sized cities across the country. Property crime and violent crime rates are much lower than the average across the country.
These crime rates have also been steadily declining over time, making the city safer and safer every year. Danbury, CT Danbury has the lowest overall crime rate in the nation, as well as the lowest rate of property crimes. MoneyGeek analyzed the most recent crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to estimate the cost of crime in nearly 300 cities in the United States. In this analysis, we ranked 297 cities with populations of more than 100,000 people, from highest to lowest security.
The following summaries show the safest cities in general, the safest large cities and the most dangerous cities in the analysis and their total and per capita cost of crime. The full data set including city population, cost of crime, and crime rates by type of crime are included at the end of this study. There is a permanent stereotype that larger cities are more dangerous. While no larger city (with a population of 300,000 or more) was on the overall safest list, fewer than half of the 15 least safe cities in the U.S.

Chicago and Philadelphia had some of the most significant increases in crime among major cities in the U.S. To rank the safest cities in the United States, MoneyGeek started with standardized crime statistics reported to the FBI.
The population of each city was added to the analysis to determine crime rates per 100,000 people, and this information was also accessed through data provided by the FBI. When cities with more than 200,000 people did not have data available in the FBI dataset, MoneyGeek conducted an individualized investigation into standardized crime statistics for each specific city.
